Six people have died after the cable wire of a cargo ropeway snapped at the popular Pavagadh Hill temple in Gujarat's Panchmahal district on Saturday.
Superintendent of Police Haresh Dudhat confirmed the six deaths.
He said police and fire brigade teams were at the spot for rescue and relief operations.
According to local media reports, two lift operators, two workers and two others died in the accident.
Instructions have been given to keep the passenger ropeway closed until further notice, Panchmahal SP said.
Panchmahal Collector Ajay Dahiya said the impact of the fall was near the base point where the first tower of the cable is located.
The ropeway, meant to carry different items, was going downhill with six persons when the incident occurred, Dahiya added.
The temple is situated at a height of around 800 metres. The pilgrims either choose to climb some 2,000 steps to the temple top or use cable cars to reach the summit.
According to news agency PTI, the ropeway for use by the public was shut since morning due to weather conditions, officials said.
Pavagadh Hill rises from Champaner in three stages, and its plateau lies at an altitude of 1,471 feet.
The hilltop has a heavily patronised temple dedicated to goddess Kali. The temple attracts around 2.5 million visitors every year.
