Close on the heels of the alleged dowry death case of Nikki Bhati in Greater Noida, a similar case of suspected dowry harassment and death has been reported from Bengaluru.
The woman, who has been identified as Shilpa Panchangamath, was found dead at her Suddaguntepalya home on Tuesday night.
Following the death, a complaint has been registered by the deceased's mother against Shilpa's husband, Praveen.
Praveen, who had reportedly quit his software job to sell panipuri, was arrested for allegedly driving his 27-year-old wife to suicide.
Shilpa married Praveen on December 5, 2022. The family claimed they spent around Rs 35 lakh on the wedding and gave 150 grams of gold to the groom.
After marriage, Shilpa and Praveen lived in BTM Layout. Praveen, earlier employed with Oracle in Whitefield, had left his job and started a panipuri business.
In her complaint, Shilpa's mother alleged that Praveen and his mother, Shantavva, used to harass Shipa both physically and mentally, demanding money for his business.
When the victim's family was unable to meet the demands, Shilpa was allegedly assaulted and sent back to her parents.
Sharada said she eventually raised the money and sent her daughter back, but the harassment continued, reports news agency PTI. Four months ago, there was a quarrel during discussions about Shilpa's baby shower.
On August 26, Shilpa's family was informed that she had died by suicide. When they reached her house, the family members found her lifeless on the bed, covered with a sheet.
Quoting her family members, media reports claimed that the victim was pregnant at the time of her death.
