Air India flight with 242 passengers on board crashes in Ahmedabad

An Air India flight with 242 passengers on board crashed minutes after taking off from Ahmedabad International Airport on Thursday afternoon.

Several casualties are feared though there is no confirmation on the same yet.At least a dozen ambulances and fire brigades have reached the spot while police have diverted traffic from the area.

The AI Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner was going to London when it went down into a residential area in Meghani Nagar area in the city around 2 pm.

“Flight AI171, operating Ahmedabad-London Gatwick, was involved in an incident today, 12 June 2025. At this moment, we are ascertaining the details and will share further updates at the earliest,” the airline said in a statement.

There were 242 people on board the aircraft, consisting of two pilots and 10 cabin crew.

The plane crashed soon after taking off from the airport. A large plume of black smoke was seen rising from the locality soon after the crash.

"Shocked and devastated to learn about the flight crash in Ahmedabad," Minister of Civil Aviation Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu tweeted. 

The minister said he was personally monitoring the situation and had directed all aviation and emergency response agencies to take swift and coordinated action.

"Rescue teams have been mobilised, and all efforts are being made to ensure medical aid and relief support are being rushed to the site," he said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Naidu and Union Home Minister Amit Shah and took stock of the situation. 

Modi directed the aviation minister to ensure all necessary support is extended immediately and asked to be kept regularly updated on the situation.
