Bharatiya Janata Party lashed out at the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Monday after he charged the Election Commission of India is “compromised” during a diaspora meet in Boston.
The Congress leader, who is currently in Boston, alleged discrepancies in the voter turnout for Maharashtra Assembly polls and charged that “something is wrong with the system”. Addressing Indian diaspora in Boston, Gandhi said, "It is very clear to us that the Election Commission is compromised, and it is very clear that there is something wrong with the system. I have said this multiple times,” ANI reported.
Citing the voter turnout of Maharashtra Assembly polls, Gandhi charged, “More people voted in the Maharashtra Assembly elections than there are adults in Maharashtra. The Election Commission gave us a voting figure for 5.30pm, and between 5.30pm and 7.30pm, 65 lakh voters voted. This is physically impossible to happen.”
Gandhi said it takes approximately three minutes for a voter to cast his vote and going by that logic, there should have been voters waiting in queue till 2am, “but, this did not happen.” Gandhi added the Election Commission refused to provide them with videography and laws have been amended now that they cannot ask for the videography. However, the Election Commission had denied the charges and asserted there were no discrepancies in the voting figures for Maharashtra elections.
