Boyfriend files complaint after 22-year-old college student found dead at home; police probe reveals honour killing

The Tiruppur police said Vidya's family opposed her relationship with Venmani as he hailed from a different community

The Tamil Nadu police have said that the mysterious death of a 22-year-old college student in her home in Tamil Nadu's Tiruppur was a case of honour killing. The woman's brother was taken into custody in this regard.

The victim has been identified as Vidya, a third-year degree student at Government Arts College in Coimbatore. She was found dead at her home at Palladam in Tiruppur on March 30 in a pool of blood. Her parents claim a cupboard fell on her, causing her death. The family hurriedly buried her at their property without alerting the police, reported DT Next.

However, Vidya's boyfriend approached the police alleging foul play in the murder.

The youth, identified as Venmani from Tirupur, filed a complaint with the Village Administrative Officer (VAO) in Paruvai, stating Vidya's phone was unreachable over the last few days. Feeling suspicious, he approached her house, after which he learnt about her death. He added that he, along with his family, had approached Vidya's parents with a marriage proposal, which the girl’s family outright rejected.

Following the complaint, the police exhumed her remains and sent them for postmortem examination. Vidya's brother Saravanan was interrogated, which revealed that he had murdered his younger sister after he opposed her relationship with Venmani. Police said Saravanan opposed the relationship because Venmani hailed from a different community.

The autopsy revealed that the student had suffered severe head injuries.
