Dr George P. Abraham (75), a renowned urology surgeon, who died by suicide, was laid to rest on Tuesday. His funeral rites were conducted at St. George Jacobite Syrian Church in Cheruthottukunnel, Kochi.

Dr Abraham was found dead at his farmhouse in Nedumbassery on Sunday night. Police recovered a suicide note from the farmhouse indicating that he was unable to concentrate on his work due to his ill health.

Nedumbassery police registered an FIR for unnatural death in connection with his death. His body was found hanging from the railings on the staircase behind the farmhouse on a rope. The FIR was registered based on the statement of his brother.

Reports said that the doctor had undergone a back surgery six months ago, which led to hand tremors making it difficult to conduct surgeries.

Meanwhile, a senior officer with the Nedumbassery police said that the suicide note mentioned his ageing issues and not having the confidence to perform surgeries as before. "It seems like he took the extreme step as it was affecting his work," said the official.

According to his family members, he used to visit the farmhouse every Sunday.

Dr Abraham served as the head of the urology and renal transplant department at VPS Lakeshore Hospital in Kochi. The well-known urologist had conducted over 3,300 kidney transplants.

He was a national board-affiliated postgraduate teacher for three years and was actively involved in academics throughout his career.

Initially, his body was taken to a private hospital in Angamaly for an inquest and later moved to Government Medical College in Kalamassery for a post-mortem examination.
