With 119 Indian illegal immigrants deported by the US landing in Amritsar on Saturday, Punjab police have arrested two of them in connection with a murder case.
The US military aircraft C-17 landed in Amritsar at 11.35 pm on Saturday. These included 67 people from Punjab, 33 from Haryana, eight from Gujarat, three from Uttar Pradesh, two each from Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Goa, one each from Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.
Who are Sunny Singh and Pradeep Singh?
Sandeep "Sunny" Singh and Pradeep Singh were wanted in connection with a murder case registered in 2023, according to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Nanak Singh.
Sunny and Pradeep are cousins. In order to escape police, the duo fled to the US through "dunki" route, which in Punjabi, refers to illegally migrating from one place to another illegally. They spent around ₹1.2 crore for their travel, according to their families.
Initially, Sandeep and four others were charged with murder in June 2023. Later, Pradeep's name was included in the FIR in the course of the probe.
The duo was arrested by a team led by the Rajpura SHO.
This comes as the third batch of 157 Indian illegal immigrants are set to arrive in Amritsar on Sunday evening. Most of them are from Haryana.
The first batch that included 104 people landed in India on February 5.
