After a long delay, the Congress party is said to have marked out important leaders who may be replacements for important positions within the All India Congress Committee (AICC). There are rumblings within the party of changes being brought about in the run up to the assembly elections in Bihar later this year.

There is speculation that around half a dozen state in-charges may be replaced or witness a change in their roles. According to sources, Bihar, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Telangana and Assam may see a new list of appointees.

All eyes are on the party in-charge of Bihar, Mohan Prakash, as the AICC analyses the performance of Bihar in Lok Sabha elections.

Similarly, speculation is rife that AICC in-charge in Jharkhand, Ghulam Ahmed may be given a different role.  Sources said since he is the leader of the Congress Legislature Party in Kashmir, he may be asked to take the responsibility of legislators in his home state.

There are seven leaders whose names are doing the rounds as possible faces who can be brought in when there is an organizational rejig in the AICC. Bhupesh Baghel, Charanjit Singh Channi, B.K. Hariprasad, Harish Chaudhary, Meenakshi Natarajan, Krishna Alavaru, Vijay Wadettiwar are said to be the front runners for the consideration of replacements to senior positions in the organisation. Moreover, Baghel is said to be a contender for a general secretary post.

In addition, leaders like Meenakshi Natarajan, Sachin Rao, Ajay Kumar Lallu and Vamshi Reddy may also be given new responsibilities in the organization, sources said.

The party has reviewed the functioning of several state units in Maharashtra, Himachal Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Bihar and Uttarakhand.

According to a Congress leader, "The changes had to be brought in in the post-Lok Sabha election period but it could not happen for various reasons”.

With the Congress top brass now focussed on Bihar, any changes in the state unit ahead of the assembly elections will be interesting to watch keeping considerations like caste equation and the performance quotient in mind.
