Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh resigned from the post on Sunday amid the ongoing violence in the state. The resignation letter was handed over by Singh to state governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at the Raj Bhavan.
"It has been an honour to serve the people of Manipur so far," Singh said in his resignation letter.
Singh was accompanied by BJP state president A. Sharda, BJP's North East Manipur in-charge Sambit Patra along with at least 14 MLAs.
"I am extremely grateful to the central government for time actions, interventions, developmental work and implementation of various projects for safeguarding the interests of every single Manipuri," read the resignation letter.
Singh's resignation comes after his meeting with Amit Shah in Delhi.
On Saturday, Singh convened a meeting with BJP-led ruling alliance MLAs at the CM Secretariat in connection with the upcoming assembly session beginning February 10.
The meeting called on in the wake of the opposition Congress seeking to move a no-confidence motion against Biren Singh-led government.
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said that his party was all set to move a no-confidence motion against the CM and his council of ministers in the Manipur Assembly on Monday. "Sensing the climate, the Manipur CM has just resigned. This was a demand that the Congress has been making since early May 2023, when Manipur erupted," said Ramesh.
He also added that CM's resignation was belated. "The people of Manipur now await a visit by our Frequent Flier PM who is off to France and the USA now," he said.
Amid unrest in Manipur, Singh on Saturday said that his government is making all possible efforts to restore peace in the state.
Since the ethnic violence between the Kuki-Meitei community broke out in the state in May 2023, over 250 people were killed.
In 2022, Biren Singh took oath as Manipur CM after NDA won 32 out of the 60 seats in the assembly elections.
