Over 10 schools in Bengaluru received bomb threats via email on Friday morning. Police and bomb squads have rushed to the spot and are conducting enquiries. Children have been evacuated from school premises.
Karnataka Home Minister Dr G. Parameshwara told ANI, "At present, we have received information about 15 schools where threatening e-mails have been received, last year also such threats were received. We cannot take any risk, we are inspecting the schools and are taking all precautionary measures in schools. We will take strict action against those who are making threatening calls. We are looking into all aspects."
Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar also visited a school premises and conducted enquiries. "I was watching TV, the school opposite to my house also got a threat mail. I came here to check. Till now it seems like a threat call. But we have to be very cautious about it," PTI quoted Shivakumar as saying.
The emails reportedly claimed that explosives have been planted in respective school premises. Bomb detection and disposal squads were rushed to respective schools and conducted searches on the school premises. The Indian Express quoting police reported that the emails were sent from various addresses by masking the IP address of origin. Over 5,000 children studying in 15 schools were evacuated from classes as part of emergency action, the publication reported.
In a similar pattern last year, hoax threats were received by over 10 schools in Bengaluru. On investigation, police traced the emails to a minor in Tamil Nadu.
