Delhi-Mumbai expressway: PM in Rajasthan to inaugurate first leg of India's longest highway

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the first completed section of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway on Sunday. The 246-km Delhi-Dausa-Lalsot section of the Expressway is expected to reduce the travel time between the national capital and Jaipur from five hours to around 3.5 hours.

According to a statement by the Prime Minister's Office, the first completed section of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway will provide a major boost to the economic development of the entire region. It has been built at a cost of over Rs 12,150 crore.

According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, this section of the highway will intersect with the already-developed Agra-Jaipur section of NH-11 near Dausa. The route will reportedly have over 40 interchanges with major ones being - Jaipur, Bhopal, Indore, Kota, Vadodara and Surat. 

The Prime Minister will also lay the foundation stone of 247 km of national highway projects, to be developed at a cost of more than Rs 5,940 crore, on Sunday. 

These include a 67-km four-lane spur road from Bandikui to Jaipur, a six-lane spur road from Kotputli to Baraodaneo, and a two-lane paved shoulder of the Lalsot–Karoli section.

India's longest 

According to the PMO, Modi's emphasis on the building of excellent road infrastructure as an engine of growth, development and connectivity in "New India" is being realised by the construction of several ongoing world-class expressways across the country.

The ambitious Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, when materialized, is expected to reduce the travel time between the two main cities from 24 hours to 12 hours. At 1,386 km, the Expressway will bring down the distance between Delhi and Mumbai by 12 per cent, from 1,424 km to 1,242 km. 

The expressway will pass through six states, Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra and connect major cities like Kota, Indore, Jaipur, Bhopal, Vadodara and Surat.

It will also serve 93 PM Gati Shakti Economic Nodes, 13 ports, eight major airports and eight multi-modal logistics parks (MMLPs) along with spurs to new upcoming greenfield airports such as Jewar Airport, Navi Mumbai Airport and JNPT port.
