Chief Justice of India N.V. Ramana on Friday declined to take up for urgent hearing an appeal against the interim order of the Karnataka High Court on the hijab issue in the state.
Ramana said the Supreme Court would interfere in the issue “only at an appropriate time”. A girl in Karnataka had approached the Supreme Court, arguing the interim order of the High Court would violate her constitutional rights.
Ramana was quoted by NDTV as saying, “Don't spread these things to a national level. We will interfere only at an appropriate time.”
Ramana reiterated his stance when the petitioner's lawyer pressed the “far-reaching implications” of the issue. “Please do not spread it to larger levels. we know what is happening. Think over, is it proper to bring these things to Delhi? The national level? If there is anything wrong, we will protect...,” Ramana was quoted as saying by NDTV.

On Thursday, a three-justice bench of the Karnataka High Court issued an interim order directing students and other stakeholders not to insist on wearing religious garments. It scheduled for Monday further hearing of pleas against the ban on hijab in some educational institutions of Karnataka.
