Tiffin services by Mumbai's Dabbawalas will be unavailable from March 20 to March 31, two major Dabbawala associations in the city said.

The statement was issued jointly by Ulhas Muke and Ramdas Karwande who head Nutan Mumbai tiffin box suppliers charity trust and Mumbai food tiffin supply service respectively.

The services will be suspended from Friday. But, won't it have an impact on the thousands who have signed up for these services. Not really, said Amruta Shivakar, who prepares hot food and distributes it through the Dabbawalas across the city. "Given that everyone has to be confined at home now anyway, there won't be much impact on them. Of course, bachelors, students and the elderly who used to get food delivered at their homes, will not get it during this period. Unfortunately, they will have to make other arrangements."

The decision was taken in keeping with the state government's instructions to suspend services across sectors in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.
