Karnataka: Two people dead as under-construction building collapses

Several people are still trapped in the debris

An under-construction shopping complex collapsed in Kumareshwar Nagar in Karnataka's Dharwad district collapsed, killing at least two people and injuring several others. Around 100 people are believed to be trapped in the debris.

"Two have died while some 30 to 40 people are trapped," said a police officer at Dharwad police station.

The first and second floors of the complex were functional and had over 50 shops, including provision stores, textile shops, pharmacies and hotels, among others. Work was going on on the third floor of the building.

Police, fire and emergency services personnel are at the spot. Search and rescue operation is going on in full swing. As many as 10 ambulances and five fire tenders have been employed.

Karnataka Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy took to Twitter to express his shock over the accident. “Shocked to learn about the collapse of an under-construction building in Dharwad. I have instructed the Chief Secretary to supervise rescue operations....,” he tweeted.
