National Youth Day, observed on January 12, is to commemorate the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda. Given that 65 per cent of our demographic is under the age of 35, the nation's future hinges on the well-being of its youth. Developing consistent mental health habits is vital for these young adults to maintain their health, fortify their inner strength, and reach their full potential."

Six ways to build a simple daily mental health routine:

*Starting your day with good intentions: It sets the tone for the day. Rather than getting invested in your phone, take a few minutes to calm yourself. Take a few deep breaths and decide to stay calm even under pressure.

*Physical exercise: Exercise is one of the most effective mood boosters. A simple brisk walk, stretching, or short workout at home releases endorphins that help you reduce stress. Reduction in cortisol, stress hormones, will enhance focus, energy, and sleep. Don't let academics, career and social engagements shift your focus from the daily 15-20 minutes workout.

*Mindful breaks: Long hours of study or screentime can be overwhelming to your brain. So, take a few breaks every few hours. Close your eyes for a while or step out and practice slow breathing. It helps in preventing burnout.

*Healthy habits and diet: Since mental health is closely linked to food, ensure to consume healthy foods. Drink plenty of fluid, and eat balanced meals.

*Express emotions rather than suppress: It is important to express feelings and emotions rather than suppressing them. Suppression would lead to increased stress and anxiety. Writing down your thoughts or confiding in a trusted friend or person could be even better. You should always let your feelings out rather than let them affect you.

*Practice gratitude: Before going to bed, give a thought to your day. Surprisingly, it would have a very positive impact on your mental health.
