Sudip Sharma, Barun Sobti, Jaideep Ahlawat, and Abhishek Banerjee are among the greatest discoveries in contemporary Indian cinema and the streaming space. Sudip proved himself to be a powerful voice venturing into some of the most raw and uncomfortable territories while also delivering immensely rewarding cinematic storytelling.
Sobti, Ahlawat, Sharma and Banerjee, on the other hand, have already positioned themselves as actors who are as comfortable in the mainstream space as they are in small-scale indie fare.
So naturally, it goes without saying that their combined might, to be soon witnessed in a new project, is going to be nothing short of special. According to a report in Variety India, the secretive project is said to be of the "genre-bending" kind and a "complete departure from Sharma's previous work." Slated to premiere in early 2027, filming for the project is ongoing with an expectation to conclude by mid-2026.
Meanwhile, “Kohrra: Season 2” is getting near-unanimous raves from all corners. The show has been hailed as yet another exemplary and rare addition to the list of acclaimed Indian titles from Netflix. In a recent interaction with PTI, the filmmaker explained that the intention of Kohrra is to focus on the "micro" (family), unlike Paatal Lok, which dealt with "macro" (society at large).
"It's a more personal show... I deliberately wanted to do that," added the filmmaker, who also co-directed the new season with Faisal Rahman, who previously assisted 'Paatal Lok' and 'Three of Us' director Avinash Arun. "It's really about relationships and about people rather than about the society at large, which is probably what 'Paatal Lok' is... With the first season itself ('Kohrra'), all three of us wanted to tell a story about these two or three people in the police force and what is happening in their personal lives."
The second season, which sees Barun Sobti reprising his character from the first season, alongside new lead cast member Mona Singh (as the former's superior officer), deals with the case of a woman's death.
With critically acclaimed credits such as “NH10”, “Udta Punjab” and “Sonchiriya” alongside "Paatal Lok" and "Kohrra", Sudip is also part of the Anurag Kashyap's upcoming crime drama "Bandar", starring Bobby Deol.
Kashyap, who, along with filmmaker Vikramaditya Motwane, started the long-format gritty crime storytelling trend with Sacred Games, has praised “Kohrra” Season 2. In his Instagram post, the “Gangs of Wasseypur” filmmaker wrote, “Could not stop watching it. Sudip Sharma is officially the first showrunner in India who now has two better second seasons of two great shows . First PatalLok and now Kohraa . The storytelling is peak , taking its time to unfold, letting characters breathe. Is in no hurry to solve the mystery, and in the process unpacks a whole town of people that needs therapy, including its protagonists . Mona Singh and Barun Sobti’s characters and performances are so cathartic . By the last episode, I was weeping. You won’t believe that it’s directed by two first time filmmakers . And kudos where it’s due , to the creatives of Netflix, to allow it to just be and breathe. Gives me a lot of hope. Unmissable and unmistakably world-class. Haven’t seen better writing in a long time. And then congratulations, Netflix India, for letting the language of the land be and not alter with the genetics of its milieu. Cinematography, music, performances, every single department deserves all the praise. This is going to blow up. (sic)”
