Filmmaker Shawn Levy’s 21 Laps production company, which backed the hit Netflix series Stranger Things, All the Light We Cannot See, and The Perfect Couple, is bringing out a new show for the streamer, this time a purely sports-based drama centered on hockey. It is created by Nick Naveda (Words on Bathroom Walls, My Lovely Wife in the Psych Ward), with Michelle Monaghan (True Detective, The White Lotus) starring as the lead.
Trey Edward Shults (It Comes At Night, Waves) will direct the first two episodes, aside from serving as one of the executive producers alongside showrunner and executive producer Bridget Bedard (Love Life, Transparent).
The yet-untitled show is set in Minnesota in the hockey-obsessed town of South Dorothy. Monaghan plays a hockey coach who has been asked to take over after a devastating tragedy that shakes up the town and the high school's legendary team. It's now up to Monaghan's Harper Sullivan to steer the team to victory and revive the lost spirit of the town.
In a statement to Netflix, Naveda said, "I’ve carried South Dorothy and its people in my heart for as long as I can remember. To finally bring that world to life with my Grizzly family at 21 Laps and Netflix is nothing short of a dream come true. Big love and gratitude to my partners for this opportunity, and for all their unyielding support over the years.”
“This show has long been a 21 Laps favorite and one of the best pieces we have had the privilege of developing and supporting,” adds Levy. “Nick and Bridget have built a world and ensemble of characters that are rooted in authenticity and huge heart, which, not surprisingly, attracted such great talent [like] our director, Trey Edward Shults, and lead Michelle Monaghan. With its visceral sports backdrop and a story grounded in deep humanity, we cannot wait to bring this show to a global audience.”
