Zack Snyder may have gotten a bit self-indulgent with some of his recent work, but there's no denying the fact that he is an interesting filmmaker with a singular vision — Can we all agree Watchmen is his masterpiece? — even if it involves excessive slo-mo and extremely obvious CGI and green screen use. But one cannot help but agree with fans of Batman vs Superman and the 'Snyder Cut' Justice League because, despite its shortcomings, they feature some of Snyder's best work.
The filmmaker, who made his debut with the zombie horror thriller Dawn of the Dead, appears to be finally moving away from the horror, fantasy, sci-fi, and superhero genres to make something completely original, with a relatively smaller budget, unlike his most popular productions. In fact, he is already in the middle of filming it, and posting on-set photographs and scenes from the project titled The Last Photograph.
Starring Stuart Martin and Fra Free, among others, The Last Photograph has a script by Kurt Johnstad ("300", "Atomic Blonde") and is based on a story by Snyder. Johnstad also wrote both the Rebel Moon films directed by Snyder. The project has been described as a "passion project" of Snyder, who is stepping into an uncharted narrative territory with the film.
Interestingly, Snyder is also the cinematographer. Hans Zimmer is on board as the music composer.
“The idea of taking the camera in hand and simply making a movie in an intimate way is very appealing to me. The Last Photograph is a meditation on life and death, embodying some of the trials that I have experienced in my own life and the exploration of those ideas through image making,” Snyder said in an earlier interaction with Deadline.
As per the official logline, The Last Photograph follows "an ex-DEA operative who must return to the mountains of South America to find his missing niece and nephew, following the brutal murders of their diplomat parents. Enlisting the help of a washed-up junkie war photographer, the only person to have seen the face of the killers, he sets out, determined to find the children and the truth, but soon learns he must also face the ghosts of his past. Their journey into the unknown takes them farther and farther away from civilization, bringing into question everything they believe, while slowly eroding the distinction between real and surreal.”
Filming locations include Iceland, Colombia, and Los Angeles.
