PVR INOX announces date for 4K remastered re-release of Satyajit Ray's 'Aranyer Din Ratri'

Based on Sunil Gangopadhyay's novel, the film follows a group of city men whose trip to the countryside becomes a profound journey of self-discovery. This special theatrical return, presented in association with Piyali Films, celebrates the film's enduring legacy

Satyajit Ray's eternal 1970 classic Aranyer Din Ratri (Days and Nights in the Forest) will be having its 4k remastered re-release, courtesy of PVR INOX cinemas, on January 9.

An adaptation of Sunil Gangopadhyay’s novel of the same name, the film, released 55 years ago, was headlined by Soumitra Chatterjee, Subhendu Chatterjee, Samit Bhanja, Rabi Ghosh, Kaberi Bose, and Aparna Sen. A tale that unfolds at a rural village, Aranyer Din Ratri revolves around a group of arrogant and privileged men who undertake a picnic only to find their superficial layers ripped apart. The journey evolves into a litmus test of sorts as they encounter various characters along the way, who hold a mirror to their own shortcomings, in turn altering their perspectives.

The film, which is being re-released in association with its original producers and distributors, Piyali Films, was screened early this year at Cannes in the Classics category.

In an official statement, Niharika Bijli, Lead Strategist, PVR INOX Ltd, said: “Re-releasing Aranyer Din Ratri is a privilege, and it excites us immensely that people will get to watch this gorgeous film on the big screen. At PVR INOX, we believe cinema is a living archive of our cultural memory, and Satyajit Ray’s films continue to speak powerfully across generations. Bringing this timeless classic back to the big screen is our way of honouring his legacy while inviting younger audiences to experience the depth, relevance, and sheer cinematic brilliance of his storytelling.”
