Batman story that inspired 'The Dark Knight Rises' to get standalone adaptation

The animated adaptation will span multiple entries, to be directed by Jeff Wamester from a script by Jeremy Adams. Recently, Batman returned in the animated series 'Batman: Caped Crusader', the second season of which is expected soon

One of the original Batman stories that inspired Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises will be getting a standalone film adaptation, albeit in animated form.

The announcement was made at the ongoing New York Comic Con 2025, during the Warner Bros. Animation panel “The Art Knight: Batman in Animation.”

The news should bring joy to fans of the Caped Crusader as it concerns the three-part comicbook, "Batman: Knightfall", featuring Batman's violent encounter with the supervillain Bane, whose live-action film version was played by Tom Hardy, in the third part of the Nolan-directed trilogy.

Released in 1993-1994, the comic book story was created by Doug Moench, Chuck Dixon, Alan Grant, Dennis O’Neil, Peter David, Jo Duffy, Jim Aparo, Graham Nolan, Norm Breyfogle, and Jim Balent.

According to a report in Variety, the adaptation will span multiple entries. Jeff Wamester will direct from a script by Jeremy Adams.

While an official premiere date is yet to be announced, the makers are said to be aiming for a 2026 release window.

The official logline goes: “When the mysterious behemoth known only as Bane frees Batman’s entire Rogue’s Gallery from Arkham Asylum, the Caped Crusader is pushed to his mental and physical breaking point.”

The most recent animated Batman property was Batman: Caped Crusader, which premiered in 2024. It was renewed for a second season which is expected to premiere sometime this year. The retro-flavoured show recalled the visual style of Batman: The Animated Series — still the most celebrated animated Batman property to date — released between 1992 and 1994.
