Don Lee to lead Korean version of 'Extraction', from 'The Roundup' team

The project reunites Lee with director Lee Sang-yong and writer Cha Woo-jin from the highly successful 'The Roundup' series. While sharing thematic elements with the Chris Hemsworth-led films, 'Extraction: Taigo' is a distinct story

Korean action superstar Don Lee (Ma Dong-seok) has been confirmed to headline Extraction: Taigo, the Korean spinoff of the Extraction films starring Chris Hemsworth. However, aside from thematic similarities, the project has no connection to the original films.

What's more exciting about the development? Don Lee is reuniting with director Lee Sang-yong, who directed him in the second and third films from 'The Roundup' series of police thrillers — The Roundup and The Roundup: No Way Out — which proved to be an immensely successful starring vehicle for the former.

Cha Woo-jin, who wrote The Roundup: No Way Out, also scripted Extraction: Taigo. Filming starts this month.

As for the story, Extraction: Taigo will follow the template of the original and will see Don Lee playing a mercenary on a mission to save a kidnapped friend. Lee Jin-wook and Chosun Biz are Lee's co-stars.

Directed by stunt choreographer-turned-director Sam Hargrave, the original Extraction franchise, a direct-to-Netflix release, began in 2020, followed by the sequel in 2023. A third film is currently in development.

Ma Dong-seok's popular action credits include: Train to Busan, Derailed, The Roundup police action movie series, The Gangster, the Cop & the Devil, Unstoppable, and Badland Hunters. He also appeared in Marvel's The Eternals, as the character Gilgamesh. It was his Hollywood debut.

Don Lee recently appeared in the Korean superhero series Twelve. A fifth 'Roundup' film is reportedly in the works, with filming set to begin in the first half of 2026.

There are also unconfirmed reports of Lee making his Indian cinema debut with Sandeep Reddy Vanga's Spirit, opposite Prabhas.
