Independent filmmaker Kanu Behl's 2023 Agra will finally see the light of day, with its theatrical release confirmed for November 14, 2025. The makers of the critically acclaimed film, which got much notice in the festival circuit, announced the release on Tuesday.
Behl, who previously fetched accolades for his directorial debut Titli, co-wrote Agra with Atika Chohan. Their script depicts a man's conflict with his dysfunctional family while also grappling with repressed sexual urges.
The film first journeyed to Cannes, where it premiered in the Directors' Fortnight and was met with a five-minute standing ovation, followed by screenings and several prizes at the Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival, New York Indian Film Festival, Indian Film Festival of Melbourne, and the International Film Festival of Kerala.
An Indo-French co-production, Agra is backed by Saregama India Ltd, UFO Production, and O28 Films.
Principal cast members include Mohit Agarwal, Priyanka Bose, Ruhani Sharma, Rahul Roy, and Vibha Chibber. Agarwal is a debutant, while Ruhani is known for her work in Telugu and Malayalam.
In an official statement, Behl reflected on the extraordinary struggle to bring the film to Indian theatres. "Agra has perhaps been the toughest journey of my life so far. A film that has taken me nearly a decade to reach its eventual audience - the Indian viewers. My hope is that it speaks its voice loud and clear, and starts a conversation. About our sexuality, the spaces that we inhabit, and everything that lies buried around it. I have never been so excited to share a piece of my work all these years!" he said.
