It was recently reported that a sequel to David Fincher's The Social Network is in development, with that film's Oscar-winning writer Aaron Sorkin, also a filmmaker in his own right, taking on directing duties this time around. We had also learned that the original cast members may not be playing the leads this time around, but two new characters based on real-life individuals, in an account of true events tied to Facebook.
The film is officially titled The Social Reckoning and will release in theatres on Oct. 9, 2026. Mikey Madison ("Anora") and Jeremy Allen White ("The Bear") have been confirmed for the parts of Haugen and Horwitz, respectively. Succession actor Jeremy Strong Sorkin has been confirmed to play Mark Zuckerberg.
Produced jointly by Sorkin, Todd Black, Peter Rice, and Stuart Besser, the new film will be based on 'The Facebook Files', a series of articles written by former Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz, who is said to be the lead character alongside Frances Haugen, the data engineer-turned-whistleblower who called out some of the company's disagreeable practices.
There is buzz from different corners that the film would be along the lines of acclaimed whistleblower dramas like The Insider and Spotlight.
Strong previously worked with Sorkin in The Trial of the Chicago 7. Madison took home the Best Actress trophy at this year's Oscars for Anora. Meanwhile, White was recently seen in the fourth season of the immensely popular show The Bear, and will be seen next in the Bruce Springsteen biopic Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere. Interestingly, Strong plays Springsteen's manager Jon Landau.
