'Game of Thrones' star leads Amazon's first Danish original 'Snake Killer', based on a real 'notorious' police unit

The four-episode series, set in Copenhagen, is slated for an early 2026 premiere and revolves around an intense manhunt triggered by the brutal murder of a police informant

Pilou Asbæk, who played Euron Greyjoy in Game of Thrones, is headlining Snake Killer, a four-episode crime thriller touted as Amazon MGM Studio's first Danish original. The series is reportedly based on the exploits of a real police unit known for being the "most notorious" in Danish history, with Asbæk as one of its members who are unafraid to bend the rules. The plot concerns a manhunt after one of their informants is found brutally murdered.  

Set in Copenhagen, the show's other cast members include  Lars Ranthe (“Another Round”), Mira Obling (“Dark Horse”), Joey Moe (“Fugleflugten”), Joen Højerslev (“Danefæ”), Laura Christensen (“Huset”) and Ali Al-Bayate (“Sommerdahl”). Anders Ølholm (“Shorta”) writes and directs.

Variety reports that the show, which is a Nordisk Film co-production, is currently in post-production phase, and that the premiere is slated for early 2026. It will most likely be available for subscribers in the Nordic region first before expanding worldwide.  

Asbæk, who was part of another real event-based Danish miniseries The Investigation and is an integral character named 'The Mule' — the third season's principal antagonist opposite lead actor Lee Pace — in the ongoing Apple TV+ show Foundation, which is based on celebrated science fiction author Issac Asimov's book series of the same name. 

The acclaimed actor is also playing one of the principal characters in director Cary Joji Fukunaga's ("True Detective", "No Time to Die") upcoming thriller Blood on Snow. An adaptation of the 2015 Jo Nesbo novel of the same name, the film has a stellar ensemble comprising Benedict Cumberbatch, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Eva Green, Ben Mendelsohn, and Emma Laird.
