Netflix has released the official teaser poster of the second season of their most popular animated series Blue Eye Samurai. A new season was most awaited given the overwhelmingly positive reception to the first season, aimed at adult audiences who were not averse to bloodshed, sex, and nudity. The animated approach did wonders for the revenge saga which took bold storytelling choices that wouldn't have been possible in live-action, similar to the recent Predator: Killer of Killers.
In an earlier statement, creators, executive producers, and writers Amber Noizumi and Michael Green ("Logan", "Blade Runner 2049") had revealed that season two was planned before the first one even dropped, and that they hoped for it to be a success so they could move forward. “When we started this project, we made a commitment to take this very personal story set in Edo-period Japan and bring it to life in the most authentic and beautiful way possible. Our animators, historians, musicians, martial artists, and voice cast made this a reality beyond our expectations.”
Teasing the adventures of its mixed-race warrior protagonist Mizu, this time in London, the makers had said, “It would be an interesting part of Mizu’s personal journey to see how Europeans react to her,” said Noizumi. “What would she think of Western culture when she’s suddenly immersed in it? Are they all the monsters she thinks they are?”
The show has Erwin Stoff as executive producer and Jane Wu as supervising director and producer. The animation was rendered by the firm Blue Spirit. The voice cast features actors Maya Erskine as the revenge-seeking protagonist Mizu and Kenneth Branagh as Abijah Fowler, alongside George Takei (Seki), Masi Oka (Ringo), Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa (The Swordmaker), Brenda Song (Akemi), Darren Barnet (Taigen), and Randall Park (Heiji Shindo), among others.
