Dream Warrior Pictures has unveiled the first teaser of Suriya’s 45th film, Karuppu, on the occasion of the actor's birthday on July 23. Packed with action-heavy moments, with Suriya rocking two different get-ups, one of a corporate guy and another of a black shirt and mundu-clad commoner, the teaser hints at the actor playing a character with dual identities — someone with a 'colourful' history, as in Rajinikanth's Baasha.
In fact, Suriya utters a line that pays homage to the iconic 'Enakku innoru per irukku' line from Baasha. "My name is Saravanan. I have another name too," says Suriya with a mischievous grin.
Touted as a festive mass entertainer, the script is penned by Rathna Kumar, a frequent collaborator of famed director Lokesh Kanagaraj. He previously co-wrote the scripts for Vijay-starrer Master (2021) and Leo (2023) with him. The makers will be releasing Karuppu in multiple languages including Malayalam, Kannada and Telugu, given the "pan-Indian" cast involved.
Trisha Krishnan plays the female lead in Karuppu, marking an on-screen reunion with Suriya after two-decades. The pair last appeared on-screen together for the 2005 Hari directorial Aaru. Aside from the main leads, the film also features stellar South Indian talents like Yogi Babu, Sshivada, Natty Subramaniam, Malayalam actors Swasika, Indrans and Anagha Maya Ravi, and Telugu actor Supreeth Reddy.
The music for the film has been composed by the young and viral sensation Sai Abhyankkar, best known for his debut single 'Katchi Sera'.
Suriya is currently riding on the success of his recent release, Retro. Though the film managed to get decent to mixed reviews, the same did not reflect at the box office. Retro is currently available to stream on Netflix.
While an official release date has not been set for Balaji’s third directorial venture, multiple reports suggest that the makers are eyeing a Diwali release. If confirmed, Karuppu will face competition from Dhruv Vikram’s Bison, and Mohanlal-starrer Vrusshabha.
