'Spaceballs' sequel announced 40 years after first film

The film will mark Rick Moranis’ return to the silver screen decades after the actor stepped down from the spotlight to raise his kids after his wife’s passing

Spaceballs 2 is official! Amazon released an announcement teaser on Thursday, which runs like a Star Wars space scroll, taking a dig at, and summarizing all the franchises that have come out since Brooks’ spoof Spaceballs in the 80s. “Thirty-eight years ago, there was only one Star Wars trilogy,” it reads. “But since then, there have been … a prequel trilogy, a sequel trilogy, a sequel to the prequel, a prequel to the sequel, countless TV spinoffs, a movie spinoff of the TV spinoff, which is both a prequel and a sequel.”

Mentioned in addition to this are the two Dunes, seven Jurassic Parks, five Avatars, and so on. The teaser ends with, “But in thirty-eight years, there has only ever been one … Spaceballs”.It then cuts to Mel Brooks, the co-writer, producer and director of the original 1987 cult classic, who playfully remarks “I told you we’d be back,” as the text scrolls across a starry background: “The Schwartz Awakens in 2027”

Released in 1987, Spaceballs was a classic parody that drew inspiration from Star Wars and other popular franchises such as 2001: A Space Odyssey, Star Trek, The Wizard of Oz and many more. It revolves around the villain Dark Helmet (Rick Moranis) and President Skroob (Mel Brooks), trying to steal the atmosphere of the peaceful planet Druidia, who is ultimately defeated by Lone Starr (Bill Pullman), accompanied by Barf (John Candy) and Druish princess Vespa (Daphne Zuniga). Joan Rivers and Dick Van Patten also starred in the film.

The sequel is in development at Amazon MGM Studios, helmed will be directed by Josh Greenbaum, with a screenplay by Josh Gad, Benji Samit, and Dan Hernandez. Gad is also set to star and produce the film, alongside Mel Brooks, who will reprise his role as Yogurt, the parody of Yoda.

The film also marks Rick Moranis’ return to the silver screen decades after the actor stepped down from the spotlight to raise his kids after his wife’s passing.

Original star Bill Pullman is returning as well, joining his son Lewis Pullman and actress Keke Palmer.

Amazon describes the sequel as “A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film.” Details regarding the film title, plot and the rest of the cast list are kept tightly under wraps. The much-awaited sequel is slated for a 2027 release.
