Two of the most good-looking people in Hollywood have teamed up to star in what is seemingly one of the most good-looking films ever made, if what we witnessed in its trailer is anything to go by. Colin Farrell and Margot Robbie share the screen for the first time in Columbus and After Yang writer-director Kogonada's A Big Bold Beautiful Journey.
The trailer promises an emotional love story where Farrell's and Robbie's characters stumble upon a portal that helps them undertake a journey to their past — to their memories of childhood, adolescence, school days... The film is said to be a different take on the time travel concept, and the trailer boasts stunning cinematography and production design. The eye-popping imagery, colours and costume design would make for ideal viewing on the big screen. In fact, the film will be releasing in premium formats, including IMAX and PXL, on September 19.
Farrell, whose last feature film appearance was in Martin McDonagh's 2022 film The Banshees of Inisherin, and has worked with Kogonada before in 2021's After Yang, is coming off the success of his HBO series The Penguin, for which he won the Best Actor Golden Globe, told Vanity Fair that working in A Big Bold Beautiful Journey was akin to "stepping from the darkness into the light. As amazing as it was to work on The Penguin, that story was all about trauma and its various articulations and calcifications. This film is all about letting go of trauma — moving past it."
Robbie, whose last screen appearance was three years ago, too, in Barbie, told Vanity Fair that whatever concerns she had about stepping in front of the camera after the brief break was immediately alleviated because "everything about this film was immediately comfortable."
Kogonada, whose Columbus and After Yang were a bit on the serious side, said the impetus to do this film came from wanting to do a story that was a "little bit larger and lighter."
"I'm a big fan of comedy and romance, but I wanted it in a kind of original context," he told Vanity Fair, adding that the script of Seth Reiss was thought-provoking, and reminded him of the Billy Wilder classics such as Sunset Boulevard and The Apartment. "This film is really about reckoning with your past in order to find the possibility of love in the present. What do you have to reckon with in order to truly connect with other people? And I think as you get older, you realize your past has everything to do with how you understand love in the present."
A Big Bold Beautiful Journey also stars Phoebe Waller-Bridge ("Fleabag"), Lily Rabe, and Kevin Kline, among others.
