Tom Cruise's last mission? 'The Final Reckoning' selected for exclusive Cannes screening

The action star returns to the Croisette as the latest — and possibly final — 'Mission Impossible' film screens at the Grand Théâtre Lumière

Tom Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie are all suited up and ready to attend the 78th annual Cannes Film Festival, where Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning was selected for a screening on May 14. The highly-anticipated film, possibly the last in the Ethan Hunt franchise, will be presented Out of Competition at the Grand Théâtre Lumière.

This will be Cruise's third appearance at the Palais des Festivals. His first appearance was for the premiere of Ron Howard's Far and Away in 1996, while his second was three decades later in 2022 for the premiere of Top Gun: Maverick, a masterful sequel to the 1986 film that took his career to the skies.

He also received a well-deserved honorary Palme d'Or — a celebration of his life's work and his status as one of Hollywood's last action stars. This year's ceremony will see Robert DeNiro awarded the same.

The trailer for Final Reckoning, released on Monday, raises the stakes tremendously, promising not only insane action sequences but also a different visual style, especially in the scenes where he takes The Entity head-on by entering a system with a VR headset.

McQuarrie, who also directed the previous four films in the franchise, was recently felicitated by Cruise at the CinemaCon film convention in Las Vegas where he was awarded Director of the Year.

Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning also features an ensemble cast featuring Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Black Mirror fame Hayley Atwell, Vanessa Kirby, Angela Bassett, Nick Offerman from 'Parks and Recreation', and Hannah Waddingham from Ted Lasso

Presented by Paramount Pictures and Skydance, MI8 will hit IMAX screens in India on May 23.
