Four films, same cast, same release month: 'American Beauty' filmmaker Sam Mendes reveals ambitious plan for his 'Beatles' biopic

The director behind acclaimed films like 'Skyfall', 'American Beauty', 'Road to Perdition' and '1917' has shared his plan for the first "bingeable moment" in cinema

Filmmaker Sam Mendes has revealed his ambitious plan for his upcoming biopic of The Beatles at Sony's CinemaCon presentation. The project will consist of four films to be released in April 2028, in a plan seen as, according to Mendes, the first "bingeable moment in cinema."

The cast has been confirmed to include Paul Mescal as Paul McCartney, Harris Dickinson as John Lennon, Joseph Quinn as George Harrison, and Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr.

The order in which the films would be released hasn't been confirmed yet, but, needless to say, Mendes will take a long time to make all four films, explaining the 2028 release window.

Mendes added that he made an attempt to come up with a way to fit the entire story into one film but found it to be impossible. The idea of a multi-episode format was considered, too, but that did not sound feasible to him either.

Mendes felt that the epic story of the "most significant" band that “redefined the culture and stayed with you for a lifetime” had to be told differently for a "new generation."

"I can assure you there is still plenty left to explore and I think we found a way to do that,” he said at the event.

Titled The Beatles — A Four-Film Cinematic Event, the project is produced by Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE), Sam Mendes, and Neal Street Productions.

Mendes, who is known for films such as Skyfall, American Beauty, Road to Perdition and 1917, last directed the Olivia Colman-starrer Empire of Light in 2022.
