Even as the Supreme Court hearing on petitions seeking legal validation for same-sex marriages entered day 2 on Wednesday, Bollywood lyricist and screenwriter Varun Grover observed that same-sex couple can raise children better than a majority of heterosexual couples.
He observed that children raised by [[same-sex couple will not be the product of a loveless marriage, greed for a son or pressure from elders.
Taking to Twitter, Varun Grover wrote: "How will a #samesexcouple raise a child?"
Definitely better than how a majority of the hetero couples raise theirs. These kids won't be the product of a loveless marriage or greed for a son or pressure from elders. They will be raised with love, empathy, and inherited grace."
"Folks saying why do we even need to compare - all parents can be bad parents, same-sex or hetero:
1. The comparison was brought up in the court today.
2. As of now the (overwhelming) evidence exists only of bad hetero parents.
3. Give love a chance & you'll be surprised," he said in another tweet.
During the hearing on Wednesday, the SC bench deliberated upon the consequences of legalising same-sex marriage including adoption and different marriageable age for male and female. "Incidentally, even if a couple is in a gay relationship or a lesbian relationship, one of them can still adopt. So the whole argument that this will create a sort of psychological impact on the child is belied by the fact that even today, on the state of the law as it stands, once we have decriminalised homosexuality, it is open to people to live-in together and one of them can adopt. It is just that the child looses the benefit of parenthood so to speak of both the parents," Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud said.
Meanwhile, National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), had on Monday, filed a petition before the apex court claiming that allowing adoption to same-sex couple is akin the endangering the children.
"Giving children to be raised by persons, having issues would be like exposing children to struggle just for experimentation and the same is not in the interest of children as every individual have same human rights and it applies to children for being raised safely. It is most respectfully submitted that children may be saved by this Hon'ble Court from being subjected to experimentation or being treated as "subject"," NCPCR stated in its petition, reported Live Law.
