A Los Angeles judge Friday terminated the controversial conservatorship that has controlled pop star Britney Spears' life for the past 13 years.

Sharing a video of her fans celebrating the verdict, Britney shared on Instagram: "I think I'm gonna cry the rest of the day." The singer has over 36 million Instagram followers.

The formal end to the guardianship comes after the pop princess's father Jamie Spears was removed from his position in charge of her finances and estate at a hearing in September. Friday's hearing ended a years-long campaign by Britney and her fans to end the conservatorship that began after her highly public 2007 breakdown, when the star attacked a paparazzo's car at a gas station.

Britney, who has two children with her former husband, the rapper Kevin Federline, has previously alleged in court that she was prevented by her father from having a contraceptive IUD removed, despite wanting more children. Jamie Spears denied the allegation.

In September, she anounced her engagement to long-time boyfriend Sam Asghari.

In an emotional post on Instagram earlier, Britney slammed her father’s ‘control’ over what she wears or says, and said she has ‘quit’ live performances. She wrote: “I'm not gonna be performing on any stages anytime soon with my dad handling what I wear, say, do, or think.”

In March, the New York Times documentary ‘Framing Britney Spears’, brough attention back on Britney and her controversial life. The highly-acclaimed documentary is about the iconic singer's rise to fame, her mid-2000's struggles, the highly-restrictive conservatorship under her father, and the #FreeBritney social media movement that arose as a result. Britney had said that she "cried" for two weeks as she felt "embarrassed" by the light the documentary put her in.
