Mollywood actor Mammootty joined the band of actors who expressed their reactions to the Citizenship Amendment Act and the widespread, violent protests spread across the nation.

In a Facebook post, the actor said India can forge ahead as a nation only when we rise about caste, creed and religion.

“We can forge ahead as a nation only when we rise above caste, creed, religion and other considerations. Anything against such a spirit of togetherness is to be discouraged,” he wrote.

He joined other Mollywood actors—Tovino Thomas, Parvathy Thiruvoth and Prithviraj Sukumaran—who expressed their views on the Act. Bollywood actors like Swara Bhasker, Vikrant Massey and Richa Chadha and Tamil actors Kamal Haasan and Siddharth too expressed their reservations regarding the Act and the police crackdown on the Jamia Millia Islamia students who were protesting against the same.

Prithviraj Sukumaran had shared a video of the protests, and wrote: “Revolution is homegrown. Always. #Rise,” while Siddharth, who has always been a vocal critic of Modi and the BJP's policies, took a veiled dig at Amit Shah and Modi, comparing them to Shakuni and Duryodhana.

Tovino Thomas tweeted: “The more they try to repress, higher the uprising will be.”

Reacting to the Jamia Millia Islamia violence, Haasan had said, “The young will have to be politically aware. They must ask questions. If their questions are stifled, then democracy is in danger. I am a student (in my field) I will continue to voice for them.” He said that CAA is a national issue, beyond party and state. Haasan's open stand was in stark contrast to his peer Rajinikanth's silence on the issue. Rajinikanth, who also took the political plunge, refused to comment on the issue.
