Why India's push for self-reliance in defence is not protectionism? Rajnath Singh explains

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh asserted that India's increased push for self-reliance in the defence sector is a critical condition for survival and progress

Amid India's increased push for self-reliance in defence sector, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh sought to clarify that it should not be construed as protectionism.

Speaking at the NDTV defence summit with the theme 'Warfare in the 21st Century', Singh observed that in an era of terrorism, pandemics and regional conflicts, self-reliance in defence is not merely an option, but a condition for survival and progress.

The self-reliance initiative of the government is aimed at transforming India from a major importer of defence equipment to a global hub for indigenous defence manufacturing, innovation, and exports.

"It is not about protectionism, it is about sovereignty and national autonomy,” Singh said.

In an apparent dig at the US, the defence minister said many developed countries are resorting to protectionist measures, with trade war and tariff war becoming increasingly serious. He pointed out that conflicts, trade wars and instability continue to shape the global landscape, and said the Centre always believed that a self-reliant India alone can safeguard its strategic autonomy.

Noting that self-reliance should not be confused with isolation, Singh said, “This is not protectionism. It is about sovereignty. When a nation of youth, energy, technology and possibilities moves towards self-reliance, the world pauses and takes note. This is the strength that enables India to withstand global pressures and emerge stronger."

He cited the examples of the recent commissioning of stealth frigates INS Himgiri and INS Udaygiri that are equipped with advanced weaponry and electronic warfare systems, the plan to develop and manufacture an indigenous aero-engine and the creation of Defence Industrial Corridors in Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu as examples of India moving in the right direction with regard to self-reliance in the defence sector.
