US President Donald Trump on Monday threatened to impose more tariffs on India for continuing to buy Russian oil, alleging that New Delhi does not care about Kyiv.
This move comes a week after announcement of 25 per cent tariff on India over "high tariffs on US goods" and procurement of Russian oil and military products.
Taking to Truth Social, Trump said, "India is not only buying massive amounts of Russian Oil, they are then, for much of the Oil purchased, selling it on the Open Market for big profits."
He alleged that India does not care about how many Ukrainians are being killed by the "Russian War Machine". However, Trump did not mention about the rate of the tariffs or when they would come into effect.
In response, India on Monday slammed the US and European countries for continuing to back Russian goods and energy products during the Ukraine war, saying the targeting of India is "unjustified and unreasonable."
"Like any major economy, India will take all necessary measures to safeguard its national interests and economic security," stated MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, adding that that the implications of the tariffs are being examined.
Last week, the US president said he does not care what India does with Russia. "They can take their dead economies down together, for all I care. We have done very little business with India, their Tariffs are too high, among the highest in the World."
India has expressed hope in concluding a fair, balanced and mutually beneficial trade agreement. The two sides have carried out five rounds of negotiations so far. The US team will visit India on August 25 for the next round of talks that will go on till August 29.
