Panna (MP), May 26 (PTI) Five labourers, four of them from the same family, died when a mudslide occurred while they were digging a well in Madhya Pradesh's Panna district on Tuesday, a police official said.
The incident occurred around 12 noon in Nayapurwa village of the Ajaygarh development block.
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav expressed grief over the incident and announced a financial assistance of Rs 4 lakh each to their families.
Panna Superintendent of Police (SP) Nivedita Naidu said that the labourers were digging a public irrigation well being constructed under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) when the mudslide suddenly occurred, and they were buried under the debris, leading to their deaths.
The deceased have been identified as Ashish Yadav, Rajkumar Yadav, Rampal Yadav, Chunnu Yadav, and Chunvad Pal.
While four of the deceased belonged to the same family, rescue teams rescued two others safely.
All the bodies have been retrieved from the debris, Naidu added.
"The news of the death of labourers due to the collapse of a well under construction in Nayapurwa of Beeharpurwa Gram Panchayat in Panna district is extremely heartbreaking. My condolences are with the bereaved families.
"Instructions have been given to provide financial assistance of 4 lakh rupees each to the families of the deceased from the state government," Yadav stated.
