Pasta biriyani and other food combos that stirred up social media

Over the years of culinary exploration, food lovers have come up with bizarre food pairings and combinations—we drool over some, and hate others. Many such innovative food combos have triggered debates and polarised foodies across the world.

The other day, a food experiment by a Pune restaurant turned into a disaster of sorts. A Twitter user posted a picture of 'pasta biriyani served with oregano raita' which ticked off Twitter users who couldn't digest the idea of mixing pasta and 'our very own' biriyani. While some said the combination was anti-national, another user said Italians and Indians don't mix—be it politics or food. There are a few others who saw nothing wrong in the combination.

As the debate continues, here's a look at a couple of other food combinations that have stirred up debates across the world.

Chocolate and cheese on toast

While chocolate and cheese spreads are popular, a London-based Twitter user Houda found herself in the eye of a storm after she tweeted a picture of a snack she had prepared for herself—grated cheese sprinkled over chocolate spread on toast. While many criticised the weird combo, others rallied behind her. The most bizarre of the reactions was when a guy from Glasgow was so appalled by Houda's culinary invention, that he even reported it to Scotland Yard police!

Houda explained to Twitter users that all she wanted to do was bring together her love for shredded cheese, and chocolate toasts.

Pickle juice soda and alcohol

Whether you like it or not, this slightly tangy, slightly spicy drink—pickle soda—is slowly emerging as a food trend in countries like the US. It was first introduced this year by Grandpa Joe's Candy Shop with two locations in Ohio and Pennsylvania. Grandpa Joe's, popular for the large collection of sodas, was soon in the news for this briny pop drink.

Reactions were mixed—while some loved the idea, there are others who called it a 'funky combo', and even called it 'one of humanity's biggest atrocities'. And now, restaurants and pubs have started creating pickle soda-based cocktails. Sample a shot of vodka or Martini, with some pickle juice for extra punch.

Pineapple on pizza

This is quite likely the mother of all food combo debates. Juicy bits of pineapple are the highlight of Hawaiian pizzas which have a great fan following among foodies. However, there are many who hate it and the debate has been on forever. The age-old debate was back in the limelight gain in February this year when the president of Iceland declared he would ban pineapple pizza if he could.

The whole debate took a new dimension when popular chef Gordon Ramsay thrashed lovers of the humble pineapple topping. “You don't put fucking pineapple on a pizza,” Ramsay said on a talk show. That sure broke some hearts.

French fries and milkshake dip

For years, dunking French fries into a glass milkshake before biting onto it has been a crazy food trend, However, it got a boost last year when McDonald's posted a picture of a French fry about to be dipped into a milkshake and asked a question: “What is your favourite flavour to dunk your fries in?” There was immediate uproar on social media and people were divided into two teams—those who dunked, and those who thought it was disgusting.
