Dog breeds Central government plans to ban

The Central government, in a bid to minimise deaths caused by incidents involving dog attacks, has asked the Delhi state government to ban the import, breeding and sale of certain ferocious dogs. The ferocious dogs that are already being kept as pets need to be sterilized, to prevent further breeding. Here are some of the breeds on the list.

Pitbull Terrier

Pitbulls are usually misunderstood, but are known to be great family dogs.

Mastiffs

The mastiff breed has sub-breeds like the English Mastiff and the Neapolitan Mastiff. They tend to be large dogs and are loving in nature.

Central Asian Shepherd Dog

These large dogs were primarily used to guard sheep.

Fila Brasileiro

The Fila Brasileiro are primarily guard dogs and were used for big-game hunting.

Rottweiler

Regarded to be guard dogs due to their alertness, Rottweilers, were originally used as herd dogs.

Cane Corso

This Italian breed was initially used to herd livestock and as a companion dog.

Japanese Tosa and Akita

The Tosa is used in Japan for dog fighting. While, the Akita, an intelligent breed was used in hunting bears.

American Bulldog

These muscular dogs, initially were used on farms or ranches.
