Dogs are lovable, adorable pets. But, certain dogs tend to have a bad reputation on account of their size. And while lapdogs and teacup dogs are great, big powerhouses are fun to be around too. Here are six dog breeds that are greatly misunderstood because of their size.

Great Dane

The Great Dane is misunderstood a great deal. The adorable dog that has been featured in the Marmaduke comics and the Scooby Doo cartoons makes for great pets. Sure, they are useful guard dogs, but are known to be couch potatoes too. Like all big dogs, they need ample exercise. Be ready to go for long walks and runs when you get a Dane.

Bull Mastiff

This one from the Mastiff family was initially bred to keep poachers away. They make for loyal companions and despite their intimidating appearance, form a special bond with their family.

Bernese Mountain Dog

Known to be an excellent therapy dog, the Bernese Mountain Dog can grow up to weigh 54 kilos. They are extremely playful and would be great in a home with children as they love activities like running, walking and more.

Irish Wolfhound

These were originally bred to hunt wolves. They aren't as ferocious as they look or sound. Standing up to nearly three feet tall, they tend to be friendly with children and family members.

Neapolitan Mastiff

The Neapolitan Mastiff were dogs of war, tracing back to the Roman times. They are known to be loyal and protective, but gentle. Bonus, the breed was featured in the Harry Potter movies.

Newfoundland

These water dogs-- they were used for rescuing people from drowning-- are protective, especially of children. They tend to have even temperament. They can weigh up to 70 kilos.
