With Mammootty's 'Bazooka' dropping on April 10, here are six gripping crime thrillers that cemented the superstar's status over the years:

Yavanika (1982)

Widely accepted as the forerunner of crime thrillers in Malayalam cinema, this wonderfully-paced K.G. George gem features Mammootty as the intriguing SI Jacob, who investigates the disappearance of a musician.

Oru CBI Diary Kurippu (1988)

This masterpiece features CBI officer Sethurama Iyer, one of Mammootty's most famous characters, taking over the investigation into the suspicious death of a young girl.

Utharam (1989)

M.T. Vasudevan Nair's emotionally-charged crime thriller sees Mammootty effortlessly slip into the role of Balu, a journalist, who investigates a heinous crime with tact and sensitivity. It is said to be inspired by Daphne du Maurier's 'No Motive'.

Paleri Manikyam (2009)

This excellent adaptation of the eponymous novel by T.P. Rajeevan sees Mammootty playing three unique characters with maximum intensity. 

Ee Thanutha Veluppaan Kalathu (1990)

Crafted by Padmarajan, this film features Mammootty as SP Haridas, who is tasked with looking into a series of murders. It also has excellent performances by Suresh Gopi and Nedumudi Venu.

Kannur Squad (2023)

This film features Mammootty as ASI George Martin, who leads a team of officers to North India in search of a criminal gang. It also had great sound design and a strong supporting cast.
