From The Lion King and Aladdin, to Beauty and the Beast, turning animation films to live action films, is being done more. It is also helping studios rake in profits. Here are the most-anticipated animation to live action adaptations to look forward to in 2024. (Compiled by Naomi Shosha Yacoob)
Mufasa: The Lion King is a prequel to Disney’s live-action adaptation of The Lion King which came out in 2019 grossing $1.6 billion worlwide. Oscar winning director Barry Jenkins will direct the movie. The prequel tells us the story of Simba becoming king of the Pride Lands and having his cub following in his paw prints while also exploring Mufasa’s story and his relationship with his brother Scar. The movie will release on December 20, 2024.
The live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch is believed to follow the same storyline as the 2002 movie which made over $273 million at the worldwide box office. The director is Dean Fleischer Camp whose work ‘Marcel the Shell with Shoes On’ received an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature film. The movie is set to release in 2024 or early 2025.
The Nickelodeon television series Avatar: The Last Airbender follows Aang, an Airbender who is the new Avatar who has to master the four elements to fight against the Fire Nation and restore the balance in their world. The series will consist of eight episodes following the storyline from the show’s first season. ATLA drops on February 22, 2024, giving a nod to the original show’s premiere date on February 21, 2005.
The live-action adaptation of Snow White follows the same main plot as the original but with a new version of the character creating a modernized version of Snow White for today’s audience. The movie will star Rachel Zegler as Snow White and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen. The movie will release on March 21, 2025.
The third instalment of Sonic The Hedgehog franchise will release in theatres on December 20, 2024. The new film (Sonic the Hedgehog 3) is believed to have a storyline based on the game Sonic Adventure 2, introducing the main rival Shadow the Hedgehog. The film will feature the trio, Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles.
