Saint Martin Island:

Saint Martin Island forms the southernmost part of Bangladesh.

Unique:

Locally called 'Narikel Jinjira', it is the only coral island in Bangladesh.

Small island:

The small island is just 3 km2 in size and is about 9 km south of the tip of the Cox's Bazar-Teknaf peninsula.

Behind the name:

In the colonial era, it was named after the then Deputy Commissioner of Chittagong -- Mr Martin.

Once part of Colonial India:

Following partition, it became a part of Pakistan. However, the Bangladesh liberation war once agains changed its ownership.

Population:

Around 3,700 Bangladeshis inhabitate the island and almost all are fisherfolks.

Agrarian lifestyle:

Coconut and paddy farming also sustain their livelihood.
