Srinagar is experiencing a surge in tourism and official visits, yet a lingering unease from last spring's attack persists, while a prominent drug-free campaign, the Nasha Mukt Jammu Kashmir Abhiyan led by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, garners significant public support, highlighting family anxieties. Beneath the surface calm, political parties feel their authority diminishing as real power rests with the LG's office in the Zabarwan hills, prompting actions like the National Conference's off-site review and planned protest for statehood. Dissatisfaction is evident with independent politician Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi gaining traction and the BJP suggesting government collapse, while other parties advocate for a united front with the Centre, which had promised statehood post-Article 370 abrogation after delimitation and elections, both now completed. However, statehood appears distant, with the Home Minister setting 2029 as a target for J&K to be terrorism-free, and the Centre reluctant to cede administrative leverage from Union Territory status until security thresholds are met, making the 2029 election cycle a more likely period for consideration. In the interim, the LG is perceived as addressing governance gaps, contrasting with Omar Abdullah's perceived frustrations, and a nuanced view suggests many residents prioritize tangible delivery of infrastructure and employment over immediate statehood, believing prosperity will deter militancy. Kashmir is increasingly adopting the "Delhi model" of dual governance with the Centre holding sway, and while the statehood demand is legitimate and politically resonant, enduring peace and parity with neighboring states remain some way off, with the Centre prioritizing security, then infrastructure, and finally political restoration under the current NDA leadership.
