Doomed obsession

68-Queen of Hearts Queen of Hearts (Danish, 2019)

Anne, a lawyer dedicated to helping victims of domestic abuse, is ambitious and no-nonsense. She is married to Peter in a seemingly happy marriage, and they have two adorable daughters. She is also someone with a keen sense of justice and fairness who, you would think, would not make an unreasonable decision.

But she does make it. When Peter’s rebellious teenage stepson Gustav arrives to live with them for a while after getting expelled from school, Anne wants to do right by him to make up for his chilly relationship with Peter. She is confident that she can help him because of her years of experience working with youngsters. She begins to cover for him and lavishes gifts on him. However, things go for a toss when their relationship turns physical. It is an affair that is doomed from the outset.

Directed by May el-Toukhy, Queen of Hearts, which was the Danish entry for the best international feature film at the 2020 Oscars, is a movie that refrains from passing moral judgments. Even as it puts a social crusader at the centre of a tale about irredeemable decisions.
