Who is Nicholas Singh? Indian-origin fugitive nabbed after 2024 'Canada-wide warrant'

Police authorities in Canada on Friday arrested Indian-origin fugitive Nicholas Singh after a "Canada-wide warrant" was issued for his arrest in 2024.

Singh, who was ranked #15 on the Bolo Program's list of 25 most-wanted fugitives, was serving a "five-year, five-month and 10-day sentence for robbery and firearm-related charges when he went on the run on May 31, 2024".

BOLO is a common law enforcement term meaning 'be on the lookout'.

According to the Ontario Provincial Police, Nicholas Singh was sought by the Repeat Offender Parole Enforcement (ROPE) Squad since he went “unlawfully at large” on May 31, and has been taken into custody by the Toronto Police.

The 23-year-old was previously convicted of discharging a restricted/prohibited firearm with intent, robbery using a restricted/prohibited firearm, and possession of a weapon contrary to a prohibition order.

Still, he was allegedly caught with a firearm, extended magazine, and ammunition when he was arrested on Friday, the Toronto Police said, as per a Toronto Sun report.

The report added that he was located in a vehicle near Bathurst and Dupont Sts at about 11:20 PM on Friday night (local time), after which he was arrested "without incident".

Police authorities later said that the ROPE Squad had been closely tracking his activities, and finally zeroed in on him after a crucial community tip.

Singh now faces new charges that include:

a) Possession of a restricted or prohibited firearm without holding a licence and registration certificate

b) Possession of a firearm other than restrict or prohibited firearm knowingly not holding a licence

c) Possession of a prohibited/restricted weapon or prohibited device knowing no authority

d) Occupying a motor vehicle with firearm

e) Possession of a loaded regulated firearm

f) Possession of a firearm with an altered serial number
