Germany on Thursday joined a list of countries mandating test requirements for passengers travelling from China to the country. The European nation has mandated rapid Covid tests for passengers from China.

Reuters quoted Health Minister Karl Lauterbach as saying that there will also be random checks upon entry for any coronavirus variants as well as expanded monitoring of wastewater.

"Europe has found a joint response to the pandemic situation in China. This is precisely what we as the federal government have been working towards," the publication quoted the minister saying. Germany has already been monitoring wastewater at Frankfurt airport.

Meanwhile, China plans to ease its Covid restrictions despite a surge in Covid cases. China, which was earlier practising a zero-Covid policy, eased restrictions following widespread protests. The recent surge in cases has left hospitals and funeral homes overwhelmed.
