Iran complained against the US with FIFA, condemning the latter for misrepresenting its national flag in social media posts.
Iran accused the United States of using a flag sans Iran's national emblem in social media posts published by US Football Federation. However, the US said it did so in solidarity with women protesting in Iran.
"The Iran Football Federation sent an email to FIFA to demand it issue a serious warning to the US federation,” BBC reported.
Quoting a US soccer spokesperson, BBC reported that the US Association replaced the flag with official flag but the spokesperson said that they continue to support the protesting women in Iran.
The death of a 22-year-old woman, Mahsa Amini, allegedly in the custody of morality police for not wearing the hijab triggered widespread protests in Iran. Iran accused the US and other foreign adversaries of instigating the protests, with the US government imposing sanctions on Iranian officials over the crackdown.
The Twitter account of the US men's team on Sunday displayed a banner with the squad's matches in the group stage, with the Iranian flag only bearing its green, white and red colours.
Iran had earlier accused US and West of instigating the protests and charged the West was trying to topple Iran government.
