The Israeli military announced the long-awaited results of its investigation into the deadly shooting of Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, saying there was a high probability an Israeli soldier had mistakenly killed her during a raid in the occupied West Bank last May.

Abu Akleh was killed on May 11 while she was covering an Israeli raid on the northern West Bank city of Jenin. The US State Department had concluded earlier that Abu Akleh was likely killed by Israeli fire as she reported on a military raid on the Jenin refugee camp in the West Bank. The report said it found no reason to suggest her killing was intentional. Palestinian leaders, including Abbas, as well as Abu Akleh's family, have rejected the State Department report and called for accountability for the Israeli military.

Her brother Anton Abu Akleh called on President Joe Biden to investigate the killing of his sister saying “someone must be held accountable.”
