As the death toll continues to increase from air strikes in Gaza, Israel kills a second top militant from the Palestinian Islamic Jihadi (PIJ) group.

Including Palestinian militant leaders Khaled Mansour and Tayseer Jabari, six children and several PIJ fighters, 32 Palestinians are reported to have died. Khaled Mansour previously survived five assassination attempts by the Israeli military.

Nearly 600 Palestinian rockets and mortars have been fired at Israel since Friday, an Israeli official told BBC.

This is the most serious flare-up between Israel and Gaza since the one in May 2021, that killed over 200 Palestinians and dozens of Israelis. Gaza fired rockets in retaliation that had Israelis running for cover.

According to Israel, about 15 militants have been killed in the strike. The flare-up has prompted a mediation by Egypt. Israel said the air strikes were carried out to prevent an imminent attack from PIJ. The air strikes were launched on Friday.
