French President Emmanuel Macron narrowly missed being hit by a bunch of tomatoes by a disgruntled onlooker as he made his first appearance after being elected for a second term. Following his defeat of his far-right opponent Marine Le Pen, Macron had spent the last few days in a secluded residence considering government formation.

The incident occurred when he made an appearance in the food market in the town of Cergy, northwest of Paris, promising a new style of governing of 'listening to people'. His bodyguard opened an umbrella to shield the president. The President was walking around, posing for selfies. Some people shouted congratulations, some asked for help to find jobs, while others asked for help to deal with health problems or make ends meet.

"In the poorest neighbourhoods, whether in cities or rural areas, we really need to create the conditions for real and effective equality of opportunity," France 24 quoted Macron as saying.

"It is the only way to get rid of this distrust... and sense of abandonment," he said. This weekend Macron became the first French president in 20 years to win a second term after he beat Marine Le Pen with 58.5 per cent to her 41.5 per cent.
